Ocean Data System / KOHLOHFF : New partnership

2023 March 20

Ocean Data System takes a new step in its international activity by announcing a distribution partnership with the company KOHLHOFF GmbH based in Germany.

Specialized in rigging and deck equipment, the German family business wishes to diversify into the electronics market. Already distributor of NKE, Karver and Adrena brands, Peter Kohlhoff, CEO of the eponymous company, aspires to weave a strong link with major actors of Brittany (and Ligerian) nautical industry.

All Ocean Data System products are concerned by this distribution agreement. The TensEasy solution remains an important entry point. It stands out by offering a very large choice of wireless force sensors with unequalled specifications to date, as well as all the elements necessary for data exploitation.

The first presentation of this range developed by Ocean Data System was presented on the KOHLHOFF stand and met with great interest at the international BOOT DUSSELDORF trade fair last January.

Its recognized expertise in on-board control/command, safety and instrumentation solutions makes this very small company an innovative and successful enterprise in the heart of Bretagne Sailing Valley.

ROUTE DU RHUM - Ocean Data System heavily involved

2022 November 29

On November 9th, 138 skippers of the 12th edition of Route du Rhum gathered to sail from Saint-Malo to Pointe à Pitre. This crossing gave them a hard time. Fluctuating weather, abandonment.
Route du Rhum is also a great performance, a mixture of technological prowess and fighting spirit.
On the starting line, 6 classes of boats (4 pro classes and 2 amateurs). Boats of different sizes but for one and the same pleasure, go through the Atlantic.
Many multihulls benefit our UpSideUp (For Security) solutions, as does SVR-Lazartigue , which opts for the Sailin' ctrl (for monitoring) solution in addition to the UpSideUp .
We are proud to be a technical partner with our UpSideUp solution on board to the WeExplore , congratulation to the skipper to his great 2nd place.
Our UpSideUp solution fits perfectly into the landscape of offshore racing.
The skippers gave of themselves, beautiful trajectories, success and beautiful supports.

Rolex Sea Middle Race : TEAM RAFALE with CKM system

2022 October 26

On the 23rd of october, at the beginning of the 43rd edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race of Malta , 118 yachts were gathered in Malta on the starting line.
A great race, with a very good result for the Elliott 52 team RAFALE, driven by Philipp Kadelbach, just featured with the CKM (canting keel manager) from Ocean Data System.
Following up on the successful CKM installation on the Elliott 35SS Palby Marine in 2021, the TEAM RAFALE opted to integrate this solution. Intended for monohulls fitted with a canting keel, CKM met the crew’s expectations during the race and, combined with the full refit of the hydraulic system, brings a big improvment in terms of quality of the keel operation and functional level, as well as reliability and maintainability.
Congrats to the crew and good luck for the rest of the race program.

ODS delivers the monitoring and SHM system to Chantiers de l'Atlantique

2021 Décember 03

A new step successfully taken in our collaboration with the Chantiers de l'Atlantique and the consortium of companies working on the Aeoldrive-SolidSail project.
Our solution, intended for the monitoring and structural health monitoring (SHM) of the 1st Aeoldrive-SolidSail production erected on the banks of the Loire at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique, is delivered. The demonstrator tests are being set up and ramping up.

Through the controlled implementation (time and budget) of the electronic control unit ODxA, the HMI builder ODxI software, the fibre optics and load sensors, Ocean Data System's engineers prove their ability to respond to demanding projects, even though being outside of the usual field of action of offshore racing and yachting.

It is also a great satisfaction for the ODS team, to participate in such projects, turned towards the energy transition of sea transport, combining expertise in sail propulsion and instrumentation with the will, to contribute to the development of virtuous solutions for the climate.

VICTORY FOR PALBY MARINE EQUIPPED WITH OUR CKM

2021 July 07

After 4 days, 13 hours and 38 minutes, PALBY MARINE, an Elliott 35 Super Sport, recently equipped with our CKM (Canting Keel Manager) solution, crossed the finish line of the 650mn Garmin Round Denmark Race in the first position in the 30.01-35ft class and 2nd overall. Congratulations to the crew for this result! We are proud to make our humble contribution.

Designed for monohulls equipped with a canting keel, CKM allows the safe control of the keel in an optimal way. It is a system that is both easy to use and of a particularly advanced functional level.

Michael Møllmann, Danish owner and skipper of the boat, chose CKM to replace his old system. After the installation and the remote commissioning by our technical team, Michael declares in our satisfaction survey that ODS provided him with "good support and service during installation and good follow-up", thus describing our after sales support as “solid”.

Well, with such results, pleasure working with his crew/him is shared!
We thank him for his confidence.

The ODS's TenSeaZy/FO solution onboard SEA EAGLE II

2020 June 27

Impressive and already iconic superyacht SEA EAGLE II built by Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman has been performed her sea trials with the expected success.
SEA EAGLE II will be ranked among the top 10 of the world’s largest sailing yachts. Upon delivery to her Owner this spring, SEA EAGLE II will be the world’s largest aluminium sailing yacht.
Together with Dykstra Naval Architects and designer Mark Whiteley, Royal Huisman made this grand aspiration into a striking reality, keeping their promise of “If you can dream it, we can build it”.
Through our partner Carbolink , supplier of the standing rigging "CL SOLID" , Ocean Data System was able to implement its solution TenSeaZy/FO for the tensile measurement of the 24 shrouds of the 3 masts with 4 spreaders. The loads in the carbon cables, measured by optical fibres transducers, are wirelessly transmitted to the monitoring system.
We are proud, thanks to the qualities of our solutions and our expertise, to collaborate on such challenges and to be able to respond to this kind of demanding projects.

Capsize of the Maxi trimaran Banque populaire IX

2018 April 18

During the night of the 13th to the 14th of April, the maxi trimaran Banque Populaire IX capsized with three people on board : the skipper Armel Le Cléac'h, his technical director Pierre Emmanuel Hérissé and their cameraman.
It is always a pity to see the capsize of such a boat and the consequences for people on board, on shore and for the shipowner are much heavy. Ocean Data System has been working for 12 years now to avoid those types of accidents by designing the UpSideUp system and its anti capsize function.
The Banque Populaire Team is fully conscious of that issue and the implementation of the system was mainly done. Only the sensors allowing the release of the ropes were to be placed and installed after the first sea trials.
According to the skipper, navigation conditions were "not so bad" but there was a sudden strong wind which has capsized the giant. Once more, we must remind that the capsize is not linked to extreme conditions nor skipper' skills. In the Ultim category, the trimarans are made for solo and extreme sailings. But, as for cruising yachts, any multihull can potentially capsize. A system like UpSideUp, properly installed and used can avoid those catastrophees.
Fortunately no one has been wounded and the boat was towed. We are sure that the team members will repair in time for the departure of the Route du Rhum. We wish them good luck in this difficult time.

2017 Décember 22

This gorgeous catamaran is the second one to be launched in Long Island 85' serie. Built in JFA Yachts yards and designed by Marc Lombard, she is now ready to leave from Concarneau to sail between Artic and Antartic oceans.
Ocean Data System brings its skills and solutions to that wonderful project. The rigging is entirely equipped with load sensors. The monitoring allows the crew to have a permanent look on the strengths in the rig. Thanks to alarms and automatic release of the sails, the yacht is secured. And our NDR solution saves all sailing data and activity historics.
Now we wish all the best to her crew !

Banque Populaire IX flying on the Atlantic Ocean

2018 Debruary 06

At the helm of his flying maxi-trimaran, Armel Le Cleac'h has gone to the sea to sail across the Atlantic Ocean. No doubt it will be a truly initiation experience that would lead him to Guadeloupe in six days.

Armel has chosen to be helped by highly experienced professionals such as Franck Cammas, Billy Besson, Charlie Dalin,... and Ocean Data System. Our solution UpSideUp will provide him security (for anti-capsize and man over board), regulation (of heeling under automatic pilot), monitoring (of flooding),...
We are very proud and grateful for Armel and his team's reliance.

Route du Rhum : Ocean Data System involved once again

2018 October 06

Just few weeks before the 40th start of the Route du Rhum, the preparation of the boats and skippers is in full swing. 2018 is a record year with a fleet of 32 multihulls, most of which, mainly among the favorites, are equipped with Ocean Data System's UpSideUp solution. As a reminder, while the primary target of UpSideUp is to avoid capsizing and reducing stress, it is also a very significant performance factor.

In Ultim class, UpSideUp always has a lot of success. The Banque Populaire IX team did an excellent job, allowing Armel Le Cléac'h to get into the race in the best conditions with, by now, a fully installed UpSideUp system. After their respective exploits in the race and records on world tour or on Atlantic, François Gabard and Thomas Coville renew their confidence and remain faithful to UpSideUp.
Sébastien Josse on Gitana 17 / Edmond de Rothschild uses Ocean Data System's sails release actuators, as does the title holder, Erwan Leroux, in the Multi 50 'class on his Fenetrea - Mix Buffet. Always in Multi 50 ', Thierry Bouchard chose UpSideUp to secure his new foiling multihull designed by VPLP, Ciela Villages. Let's not forget that Gilles Lamiré's French Tech St-Malo was already equipped during his 2010 victory with Lionel Lemonchois.
With Multi Rhum, UpSideUp takes the start with the trimaran Bo Carre 40 'skippered by Gildas Breton and the TS42 too vitamin, Guyader Gastronomy, by the way, it is clearly thanks to UpSideUp that he did it. not met the dark side of the heel a few times!
Let's keep in mind the various IMOCA 60s equipped with Ocean Data System's CKM pendulum keel management solution.

We wish all the skippers who trust us, a beautiful Route du Rhum, without stress, perfectly aligned with their objectives. We hope others will not regret missing our UpSideUp solution ...

Despite the new one-design rules, 7 skippers, out of the 29 racing the Vendée Globe, are using CKM or the previous system Keel Control to manoeuvre their keel:
Maître coq, Comme un seul Homme, MASCF, One planet One Ocean, Bastide Otio, Great American IV.

Fair Winds to all skippers!

New ODSpot

2016 August 11

The range of deck projectors ODSpot evolves.

Always in a concern to offer its customers the best products integrating the latest technologies, Ocean Data System updates the ODSpot range:
The new drivers (supply modules) allow the use of the ODSpot on applications requiring big cables lengths (super yachts masts) without using additional filtering modules. They also offer multiple possibilities of control on the luminous intensity (dimmer).
The last generations of LEDs is integrated in the ODSpot for a better brightness and less heating.

The new ODSpots range is more efficient, but keeps the same outside aspect and the same dimensions !

New Record!

2016 July 05

Even if the weather refused to François Gabart the record of the crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, still detained by Francis Joyon in 5 days 2 hours 56 min and 10 s since June 2013, the skipper and the "MACIF" Ultim trimaran brought down another quite new record: the longest distance traveled in 24 hours in trimaran, with 785 miles, so more than 32 knots of average on Sunday, July 3rd, a few hours after its departure of New York.
Crazy speeds that Thomas Coville on the "Sodebo" trimaran had achieved too on the 8th ofJune, by improving the previous record with 718,5 miles traveled in 24 hours, 29,93 knots of average!

Prince de Bretagne trimaran

2016 June 27

After a 6 months refit, the trimaran "Prince de Bretagne" has been launched in June and raced the SNSM Record from St Nazaire.
Ocean Data System has been part of this refit, taking care of all the electric electronics and computing on board.
The boat's progamm for 2016 says the trimaran will be on the starting line of the "Trophée Prince de Bretagne" in Saint-Quay Portrieux from the 26th to 28th of August, and the Dream Cup between La Trinité-sur-Mer and Roscoff form the 13th to 21st of August.

The Transat Bakerly. The winner is François Gabart.

2016 May 11

8 days 08 hours and 54 minutes, it is the time François Gabart needed to cross the finishing line of the Transat Bakerly race with his trimaran MACIF; the race even looked like a regatta as Thomas Coville, on his trimaran SODEBO, always stayed in the contact: he conceded only 10 hours. Congratulations!

These Ultimate trimarans, with their potential of speed, were able to fetch ideal conditions following a southern course, reaching speeds of more than 35kts, with an average speed of 22kts.

The UpSideUp solution, installed on both first Ultimates and most of the multihulls of oceanic races, contributes, as many other elements, to the level of commitment the skippers involve in this type of race. Except their high qualities of sports sailor, they know how to surround themselves with an irreproachable technical team, make the good choice of equipments and to use them (the equipments) in an optimal way. No doubt that the safety which the UpSideUp brings and the stress which it makes a little less omnipresent, allow them to push back the limits and to hold those stunning performances on such distances.

Congratulation to François Gabart and Thomas Coville for this beautiful duel through the Atlantic Ocean and for their phenomenal commitment.

The winner said:
“I believe that it is the hardest thing which I’ve ever made in terms of commitment. It is very demanding, up to the end. I’ve never involved myself so much physically...
I do not know how long I will need to recover from it, but it will take time. I am not able to sail two races like this one in one year!”
